Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Atlanta, Georgia: Comprehensive Day Treatment at Buckhead Behavioral Health
When it comes to outpatient addiction treatment, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) stands out as one of the most intensive and effective levels of care. At Buckhead Behavioral Health in Atlanta, Georgia, our PHP offers a structured, supportive environment that helps you break the cycle of substance abuse while still allowing you the freedom to return home or to a sober living environment each night.
Our compassionate staff brings over 60 years of combined experience in treating substance use disorders, mental health disorders, and dual diagnosis conditions. In this blog post, we’ll explore what a PHP is, who it’s best suited for, and what you can expect when you join our Partial Hospitalization Program at Buckhead Behavioral Health.
What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A partial hospitalization program—often called a “day treatment program”—is the most intensive form of outpatient addiction treatment. You’ll attend therapy sessions, support groups, and other clinical services during the day (typically 3 to 5 days per week). Unlike inpatient or residential rehab, you do not stay overnight at the treatment facility. Instead, you return to your home or a sober living environment in the evenings.
Even though PHP is considered “outpatient,” the level of structure and support is higher than most other outpatient options. This makes it an excellent choice for individuals who need significant help in early recovery but also value the ability to maintain some daily responsibilities.
Is a PHP Right for You?
Our Partial Hospitalization Program at Buckhead Behavioral Health is ideal for:
- Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Needs
If you might benefit from MAT but don’t require a medically managed detox, a PHP can be a perfect match. - Stepping Down from Residential Rehab
If you’re transitioning out of an inpatient program or you already have a robust support system at home. - Emotional and Physical Stability
If you’re stable enough to participate in group sessions without needing round-the-clock supervision. - Intensive Treatment Without 24-Hour Care
If you need a high level of structure but do not require overnight monitoring. - Ongoing Support and Counseling
If you need continued care to address emotional, mental, and physical facets of addiction recovery. - Coping Skills and Education
If you want to learn healthier ways to manage cravings and avoid future relapse.
At Buckhead Behavioral Health, our PHP is one of our most popular levels of care. It provides a solid foundation of skills and tools necessary for long-term recovery.

Therapies Used in Our PHP
Individual Therapy
One-on-one sessions with a therapist to explore triggers, thought patterns, and coping strategies. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is often used to help identify and change negative thought processes.
Group Therapy
Whether 12-step-oriented or another modality, group therapy fosters community support and helps clients realize they are not alone. Sharing personal experiences in a non-judgmental environment encourages mutual understanding and motivation.
Family Therapy
Addiction often impacts the entire family. Including family sessions in treatment can rebuild trust, heal emotional wounds, and strengthen the home support system essential for long-term success.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Used primarily for alcohol or opioid addictions, MAT involves FDA-approved medications like Suboxone or Vivitrol to ease withdrawal symptoms and minimize cravings. When combined with therapy, MAT significantly improves treatment outcomes.
Partial Hospitalization vs. Inpatient Treatment
While both PHP and inpatient treatment offer comprehensive services, there are key differences:
- Inpatient Treatment
- Requires living onsite for 30 to 60 days
- Removes you from your usual environment to focus solely on recovery
- Offers 24-hour supervision
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
- Provides intensive treatment during the day
- Allows you to return home or to a sober living environment in the evening
- Offers a high level of care without requiring overnight stays
At Buckhead Behavioral Health, our PHP in Atlanta strikes the balance between structured support and personal freedom, making it an ideal choice for many individuals seeking recovery.
Are Partial Hospitalization Programs Effective?
Yes. Despite being an outpatient program, a PHP delivers many of the same benefits as inpatient treatment, including therapy, education, and group support. However, PHPs may not be ideal if:
- You lack stable housing or a supportive living environment
- You are experiencing severe, life-threatening withdrawal symptoms
- You have already attempted treatment multiple times and need a more intensive approach
Insurance Coverage for PHP
Buckhead Behavioral Health partners with a variety of insurance providers. While the specifics depend on your carrier and plan, outpatient programs like PHP are often more cost-effective than inpatient care. Our admissions team will gladly discuss coverage details and alternative payment options to ensure you get the help you need.
Life After Our Partial Hospitalization Program
A PHP is typically one step in a continuum of care. After completing PHP, many clients transition into:
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
A slightly lower level of care than PHP, with fewer treatment hours while still providing strong clinical support. - Outpatient Drug Rehab (OP)
The least intensive level of outpatient programming, focusing on long-term support and reintegration into daily life.
Even after stepping down from PHP, you’ll have access to aftercare services and alumni resources, such as:
- 12-step support groups
- Drug testing and continued check-ins
- Job placement assistance
- Relapse prevention strategies
